Theater Improv and Solo Performance Workshop
September 1 thru October 20, 2014, Mondays at 9 p.m.
An 8-week workshop for non-professional actors, age 18 and over. This workshop is for people who:
- Enjoy storytelling and acting
- Want to try their hand at turning a story from their real-life into a stage-worthy performance
- Want to meet other non-professional actors
- Have an interest in improvisation that isn’t just about making people laugh
- Appreciate how performance playtime can make them more creative in other areas of their lives
Participants will learn techniques used by theater performers to warm-up for rehearsal and performance. Working in a small group (no more than 15 participants) over the course of two months, they will be introduced to a variety of theater games and techniques that performers, corporate execs, teachers and others use to enhance: Creativity, Attention, Listening Skills, Flexibility, Physical Presence, Empathy, Authenticity, Communication Skills and Imagination
While learning theater and improv games and techniques during the first eight weeks of the workshop, each participant will create a unique solo performance piece based on life experience, dream, memory, fantasy, etc. These short, individual stage works will be shared in public during the ninth and final session of the workshop. Participants will invite family, friends, co-workers, etc. to attend.
Some of the objectives of the workshop are:
- To learn improv theater-based skills that will support creation of a short one-person performance
- To explore the ways theater/performance skills can enrich and expand day-to-day, off-the-stage life
- To seed the development of a solo performer community in MS
